4-5S are growing mould

How do you make food last longer?

That is the question that was posed in 4-5S.

Students designed an experiment where they saw what factors increased the growth of mould on bread. They included variables such as cold, heat, dark, light, water content and the addition of foreign chemicals.

Students made their own hypothesis then made daily observations of any changes.

In the end their observations were:

  • After 2 weeks the bread in the fridge was still great.
  • The bread in the dark grew less mould than in the light.
  • The bread that was dampened grew mould faster and 2 different types of mould.
  • The bread that had sugary water added grew mould the fastest and grew lots of different types of mould.

The class concluded, to make food last longer keep it dry and keep it cold.
